During a visit to New Mexico in 2009, we stumbled across some fabulous lighting conditions over the dunes. As a monochrome worker, not really understanding the colours these conditions would produce, it was only when I returned home that I realised I had not taken full advantage of the lighting.

In 2011, we returned to the area and were once again lucky enough to have good conditions with some wonderful lighting. The sand dunes are in a bowl surrounded by mountains and it is only possible to achieve a full sunset when there is no cloud base, but what does happen is that the afterglow gives a wonderful colour spectrum which I have never seen elsewhere.

Previously you will have only seen the monochrome images of the dunes, which I have normally preferred to take, how wrong can one be!

Please enjoy them
